BLUR
THE
LINES.

Blur the Lines is a creative platform based in Leeds, showcasing an array of Artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. The event features Rappers, Comedians, Poets & Musicians all under one roof, bringing people together and blurring genre lines.

Curated by Leeds Rap & Spoken Word Artist Lence, Blur the Lines has taken its signature show to Leeds Lit Fest and to the Furnace Festival at Leeds Playhouse for a memorable, Sold Out show. The most recent event was run in association with Come Play With Me, taking place at The Holbeck.

The first ever Blur the Lines took place as part of Leeds Lit Fest 2019 at Hyde Park Book Club. The inaugural Leeds Literature Festival programme had been announced and at the time Lence was beginning to establish himself as a key member of the Rap & Spoken Word scenes in Leeds.

He noticed that most of the people he had performed alongside at these events in the City were not booked for the festival and that there was need for the local Rap and Spoken Word scenes to be represented at an event celebrating literature.

It felt like there was an opportunity here to inject a new energy. Lence began a dialog with the organisers and was eventually given the chance to run his own night as part of the Festival.

Jack Simpson from Hyde Park Book Club offered the time & space at his venue. Jack spoke to Lence on the phone to finalise the details of the event and left it to Lence to come up with a name to make the event official.

Lence decided on the ‘Blur the Lines’ name because it encapsulated what the platform stood for, representing the arrival of an event with a new direction.

Blurring the lines of Poetry & Rap, questioning how Rap is viewed in relation to literature and also establishing an event that brought together people that previously hadn’t crossed over with each other before in spaces where it felt like this needed to happen.

A SHORT HISTORY

9.3.19 – Lence presents Blur the Lines at Hyde Park Book Club for Leeds Lit Fest 2019

The first Blur the Lines arrived on a crisp Saturday night in March at Hyde Park Book Club for the Leeds Lit Fest featuring 20 Poets, Rappers and Singers all performing on the night. It was a very busy night with the audience queuing out of the door to see the performances! The variety of the artists helped to attract a unique crowd that were eager to see their favourite performers showcased at the festival. The night began with Poetry and concluded with Live Music.

The reverberations from that event continued to spread through word of mouth and there was a distinctive demand for more of where that came from! The intrigue surrounding what the event would be like turned into an understanding that this was only the beginning of something much more. Eager to continue the momentum from the first show, Lence began discussions with Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director, James Brining about the possibility of organising a Blur the Lines in the Theatre Space.

The idea of the event began to grow and the direction of the night began to live up to its name. Lines were being blurred, barriers were being broken and spaces were being filled with urgent creative voices. Having first appeared at the Lit Fest, Blur the Lines was about to appear in a prestigious Theatre, showcasing a selection of artists who for the most part had never performed at Leeds Playhouse before. There was an excitement and a hunger, a real sign of growth. The sense of occasion brought with it an audience that eagerly anticipated what felt like a Cup Final of Creativity.

15.11.19 – Lence presents Blur the Lines at Leeds Playhouse for the Furnace Festival 2019

Lence finalised the event with the Theatre and within 72 hours of Blur the Lines at Leeds Playhouse being announced the tickets had Sold Out. The stage was set at the Bramall Rock Void. 90 minutes was the allotted time, with a line-up of 20 artists each performing their best work. There was a powerful buzz backstage that night and an electric atmosphere in the auditorium. The event was programmed as part of the annual Leeds Playhouse Furnace Festival celebrating new work.

The occasion mixed together with the excitement everyone felt to share their work in a unique environment made for a memorable event. There was a collective effort from everyone backstage and out in the auditorium to make this one as special as possible. Rappers, Poets & Musicians crossed over into the Theatre Space, presenting their work to the existing supporters that had attended the first event as well as a brand new audience that had never seen this type of variety before at Leeds Playhouse.

This event helped to integrate the Spoken Word and local music scenes with the Theatre, making them aware of the unique array of talent that this City has. Photos from the event would even go on to be used to promote the Furnace Festival itself. This reflected how Blur the Lines had achieved a lasting legacy at Leeds Playhouse, showcasing artists from Leeds that produced work that urgently needed to be seen.

6.3.20 – Lence presents Blur the Lines at Leeds Lit Fest 2020

The spark continued to grow, with more interest being generated as a result of the previous events and with momentum continuing to build, Blur the Lines returned to Leeds Lit Fest for the second annual festival. This time the venue was The Holbeck WMC (the oldest Social Club in Britain) run by Slunglow. Lence went to check out the venue a couple of weeks before the event was due to take place and was immediately struck by how much bigger the space was than previous events. The challenge of filling out the space with an audience ready for some Blur the Lines action was accepted. The line-up was established with an injection of new performers, making their debuts.

Some artists that had only previously attended Blur the Lines were now given the chance to perform themselves. This brought a fresh energy and symbolised the direction of the event, observing who was hungry to perform and providing the stage for them to showcase themselves. A trailer for the event was shared online, generating interest and reaching new people. This trailer has since become the benchmark when it comes to pre-show promo for our event. As a result of Blur the Lines returning to Leeds Lit Fest, Leeds Inspired supported the event through their funding.

The night started with a strong sense of anticipation, there was now an expectancy for Blur the Lines to deliver and to live up to the reputation it was building. The large space at The Holbeck WMC began to fill up ahead of the first performance. This event went onto be the biggest attendance yet, with every chair and table taken up. The venue helped to deliver a sensational array of entertainment, presenting Rap alongside Comedy, Poetry and Live Music. All of the artists took to the stage to close the show to a massive reaction from the audience. This was another example of a collective effort, from the camera team, to the sound engineer, to the DJ, all the performers, hosts as well as all the audience members.

12.11.21 – Lence presents Blur the Lines 2021 in association with Come Play With Me

Shortly after the third event at Leeds Lit Fest 2020, lockdown meant that there were no live shows for quite a while. Through this period of time photos and videos from the previous Blur the Lines events would often be shared on social media by different artists and audience members reflecting on the memories. In June 2021, Blur the Lines was invited into Leeds Playhouse for a week in the Bramall Rock Void. They spent this time filming new content such as music videos, performances to publish online, footage for future event trailers, artist interviews and much more.

During this time Blur the Lines also began to improve its online presence with the creation of an Instagram Page. This became an online space to share regular updates regarding any new show developments, post clips and photos from previous events as well as feature regular artists and their work. Alongside this, Lence began to attract the attention of Leeds based music development organisation Come Play With Me who were interested in running the next Blur the Lines event in association with them.

This was a great opportunity to further integrate the creative scenes in Leeds and to help more artists appear on their radar. Lence confirmed a date for the next Blur the Lines with The Holbeck WMC and through the support of Come Play With Me, funding was secured with Leeds Inspired. The return event took place on 12.11.21, it was special to have everyone back in the same space, creating a brilliant reunion show. In the run up to the show, promotional interviews with Lence in the Yorkshire Evening Post and on BBC Radio Leeds helped to add to the excitement.

Since the last event Blur the Lines has continued to strengthen its online presence sharing regular interviews with artists as part of a series available on their Instagram & Facebook Pages called the Who? What? Where? They’ve recently interviewed 21 artists, highlighting a featured artist each week, exploring their creative process and delving into their journey so far. Performance videos are also available online at the Blur the Lines YouTube Channel from previous events.

‘….there was a buzz of excitement amongst the other young whipper-rappers, apparently, Lence was ‘the real deal’, had to be seen, he was ‘special’…he was spectacular, young, edgy and intense; words hitting home, nerves burning in his chest and pulling out a performance that connected directly with each person watching…that’s a talent. When Lence organised his first Blur the Lines… it forced me to admit that I’m a hypocrite. ‘I ’ate poetry, me’ used to be my response to poetry nights, yet there I was saying, ‘I right enjoyed that.’ The people he selected were clever with words and had real things, life things, to say; they made connections. He selected poets/MCs with fresh perspectives and the skills to convey them. I’ve seen Lence perform his hip-hop sets at least ten times. I’ve watched him grow and develop, tighten his already compelling performances. He’s retained his intensity but now owns any stage he stands on. I think you should witness his belief and honesty, the intensity of his words and those of the people he’s selected, It can be words that open up our worlds or soothe our prickling souls. Go feel the passion. TRUTH’.

Mick McCann from Culture Vulture(When first seeing Lence & describing his experience of the Blur the Lines event) 8.11.19

"As well as hosting creative writing workshops in schools and youth centres, Lence has launched his own events to help other aspiring musicians and creatives. Blur The Lines brings together a versatile collection of rappers, poets and spoken word artists under one roof, helping them form connections with artists they might not otherwise meet."

Abbey McClure of the Yorkshire Evening Post - ‘Showcasing Leeds talent' - 06.11.21

"First of all, after being blown away by last years 'Set The Pace' album I was really looking forward to hearing where he'd go next... To me, Lence is at the absolute peak of the self produced U.K. Hiphop scene and has many of the crucial elements to make me feel that from his powers of communication simmered into sick flows, the story-telling elements that go from frank introspection to keen observation all with the great production that screams out that this guy CARES about what he puts out. It's all with a genuine working class voice that offers not only a way out and hope but also a way in. It's inspirational stuff but it's not afraid to touch on the darkness too. Political, powerful and fresh this marries well to the boss beats and samples and I expect big things for Lence...Recommended! 6music take note!"
